Has anyone seen the unusual baby name story on yahoo news?

baby name
Hannah asked:

I think anyone considering giving their baby an unusual name should read it. They should really think about it before they do go to far and give their child a ridiculous name. I think some people actually give their children strange names for attention. Seriously who really thinks Calipso, Cloud, or Jasper are ever a good idea? Anyone else feel some people are going way to far.

I saw it, and i thought the big thing was that all the ‘common’ names people keep complaining about really aren’t as common as we think

but really, Jasper is a fairly normal name, it’s at least been around for a while Girl at the Rock Show

    Definatly
I know someone from school who had twins boys and named them Blue and Denim (I’m seriously not joking) I actually think that it’s sick to give your child a name like this and also knew someone who had a double barrel first and second name with 3 middle names which is a bit extreme. Katherine

    I agree completely.
There used to be names that were unusual but still real names. But because they are being used so often people are making things up which is not a good idea. Yeah Jasper is pretty bad I think and Cloud is horrible. I have seen worse. I am not a big fan of last names being used as first and that is becoming common. But yeah when you stick a very weird name on your child you open up the door for them to be picked on. Another thing I don’t like is misspelling Come on spell it the way it was spelled originally so that the teachers can pronounce it when they read. My niece’s name is Olivia great name but my sis spelled it Alyvia and hardly ever does anyone pronounce correctly. peebo

These people are probably tired of hearing the same old names- they’ve been around since the beginning of time and they get boring. I think they may feel that it gives their child a sense of identity and uniqueness and maybe even excitement. I would actually rather have a “weird” name like Calipso, Cloud, or Jasper over a “normal” name like Betsy. Sometimes it’s nice to be different and have something that sets you a apart from others. Firstly, Jasper is a completely normal name! A little old fashioned, but not crazy. My name, Pavely is EXTREMELY unusual. However, it gives me a sense of originality and I love it. I think that some names are unnecessarily “out there”, but most of them are unique. Just because something is different, doesn’t mean its wrong. HOWEVER, there is a fine line between unique and ‘wierd’. If your child will be teased and humiliated due to a name like “Elmo” or “Batman” or “Watermelon”, then I’ll admit it goes too far. Pavely

Well Jasper isnt so bad. Aside from the Twilight reference it’s an okay name. However, I completely agree with this article. Being different to be different is not what people should focus on. Being different because you ARE different is okay, but striving for being different can be very harmful to our society.

I do believe that parents also have a hard time understanding that their “cute little baby” will not be a cute baby/child forever and will eventually be middle aged when these “cute names” are no longer cute and rather ridiculous.

As far as I’m concerned, I’d much rather my child have a normal, boring name that works with them throughout their life than a name that makes them stand out and does not work past the age of 2. Ellie B
